5 Common Reasons Why You Run Out of Hot Water & How to Fix It

Few things are more frustrating than jumping into a shower, only to have the water turn cold before you're finished. If you've experienced this, you're not alone. Running out of hot water can be caused by several factors, from issues with your water tank to problems with heating elements.

In this blog, we'll explore the common reasons why you might run out of hot water and some tips on how to fix them.

Undersized Water Tank

If you have a traditional tank water heater, you have a finite amount of hot water to use at any one time. With this in mind, if you constantly find yourself running out of hot water quickly, especially when multiple appliances are in use simultaneously (such as showers, washing machines, and dishwashers), it's likely that your tank isn't large enough to meet the demand.

To combat this, consider switching to a tankless water heating system. Unlike traditional water heaters, these systems heat water as it flows through the unit—meaning no more waiting for a tank to refill and heat up. A tankless heater provides your home with a consistent stream of hot water for as long as you need it.

Sediment Build-Up

Sediment and loose minerals naturally make their way into your water heater tank. However, when they build up on the bottom of your heater, they can take up space and leave less room for water. Plus, they can block the heater located at the bottom of the water tank, meaning your water doesn’t get as warm as it should or it takes longer to heat.

You can avoid this by having a plumbing professional inspect and flush out your water heater as part of your regular maintenance checks.

Broken Dip Tube

The dip tube is a component inside your water heater that directs cold water to the bottom of the tank, where it can be heated. If the dip tube is broken or cracked, cold water may mix with the hot water at the top of the tank, resulting in lukewarm or cold water coming out of your taps. Finding pieces of broken plastic in your showerhead or appliance filters is a good indicator that this is the issue.

If you suspect a broken dip tube, it's best to call a professional plumber to inspect and replace it if necessary. Attempting to repair or replace the dip tube yourself can be challenging and may result in further damage. Or, switching over to a tankless water heating system can negate this issue entirely.

Thermostat Issues

Your water heater's thermostat controls the temperature of the water in the tank. If the thermostat is set too low or is malfunctioning, it may not heat the water to the desired temperature, resulting in lukewarm water or running out of hot water quickly.

Have a plumbing professional check your water heater’s thermostat to ensure that it’s set at an appropriate temperature and can accurately read the temperature. If the thermostat doesn’t appear to be reading the temperatures correctly, it may be time to replace it.

Broken Heating Element

Electric water heaters contain one or more heating elements that heat the water in the tank. If this element is broken or malfunctioning, it won't be able to heat the water effectively, leading to a reduced hot water supply.

This issue usually occurs in older water heaters. While these can occasionally be repaired, a broken heating element may indicate you need a new water heater altogether. To ensure a long-lasting and efficient system, it’s recommended that you upgrade to a tankless water heater.

It’s easy to be frustrated when you run out of hot water, but it's often a problem with a solution. Whether it's upgrading to a larger water tank, switching to a tankless water heater, flushing out sediment buildup, or repairing a broken component, there are various solutions available to restore your hot water supply and improve your overall comfort and convenience.
